January 1, 2003 Hidden Falls

Welcome to 2003. For many of us, this is the best way to welcome in the New Year. Gathering up the cold weather gear, shoving it into a bag, loading the boat atop the car, and getting down to Hidden Falls in time for a one o'clock launch may seem like a lot to do -- and it is -- but somehow the year gets its best start on the water. Personally, I was glad to bid adieu to 2002; it was not an easy year on many fronts. And of course, waking up on the 1st does not necessarily change the world. But one's outlook brightens after snugging down the spray skirt, warming your hands in your pogies, paddling hard upstream, crossing the current near the falls, and then watching your friends roll and roll in the cold water as if it were summer -- that brightens one's outlook! My personal wishes are for a peaceful new year. But if nothing else, it can be a wet year.....
