Earth Day in October - Oct. 4, 2003 ![]() Thanks to all who come (not everyone is pictured above)! The forecast for today was not so hot, but this morning, the winds died down, the clouds settled the warm air over us, and we were thrilled to have a perfect autumn day for our Earth Day cleanup. Adopting Lake of the Isles has been an adoption we haven't done well yet -- this was our first official cleanup. The Minneapolis Parks Board was happy to have us and gave us a permit to clean up the islands too. Thanks to them as well! They provided us with bags, gloves and vests identifying us as volunteers. Fourteen of us met up on the north side of Lake Calhoun in the morning. We paddled out to Lake of the Isles and split up, some folks doing shoreline, and others doing the islands. The islands were relatively clean compared to some parts of the shoreline. Oddities picked up today were numerous straws, cigar tips, camping gear, fishing line, plastic of all sorts, and a child's videotape. This year, no turkeys, but we did find some uncooked chicken legs (what is that about?). We worked hard for a few hours, loading our plastic bags with trash, and then whistling for Scott and his roomy canoe. Scott hauled the garbage around -- thanks to him for being our garbage boat! We look forward to another cleanup day in the spring.... See More Photos! P.O. Box 80331 ~ Minneapolis, Minnesota 55408 [contact us] |
