Mississippi River -- Coon Island Dam to Boom Island - November
25th, 2001 Today marked the first of our real winter paddling day trips. While the first snow storm is still hours away (hooray!), it was brisk today, with temperatures in the low thirties and the wind blowing at 15-20 mph. We paddled eleven miles, from Coon Island Dam to Boom Island, stopping for lunch along the way. It was cold. We managed to stay pretty warm, with some tinkering with layers as needed. Some folks wore dry suits and others wore combinations of wetsuits and fleece layers. There was some experimentation with various fabrics and layers (some unsuccessful). I had terribly cold fingers until I gave up on the neoprene gloves and put my bare hands in a pair of neoprene pogies -- ah -- they really did wonders! ![]() Copyright © 2002 Inland Sea Kayakers.
