Lake Waconia, April 1, 2000
by Jody Russell

We were pleased to see nine people show up for the Lake Waconia paddle. As our numbers grow, so do the number of people participating. Hooray.

What a surprising day. The temperatures were mild and the sun cooperated. Some of us were surprised to find sunburns when we got home. Others were surprised (I won't mention who...) by aches in muscles not yet well used for paddling this spring. And then still others were surprised by successful bracing attempts...photo

We celebrated Linda's 50-something birthday with a party hat, a candle, and color-coordinated balloons for her boat.

I felt compelled to further test the experience of circumnavigation. We paddled around Coney Island (yes, even Minnesota has a Coney Island), watching blue herons busily building nests. There was quite a bit of activity. On our way back to the boat landing, we were amused to find many golf balls in the water near shore. Chuck demonstrated his roll and grab (rolling over and grabbing the golf balls) technique. A nearby golf course was undoubtedly responsible, though I wondered if the thrill might have been to aim for noisy water craft rather than a small hole in the ground...

Thanks to all who paddled with us!
